In terms of the Skills Development Act, 9 of 1999, the Nelson Mandela University, as a Higher Education Institution, is recognized as a multi-purpose provider of education and training programmes. It’s formal programmes have provisional registration with SAQA and are therefore recognized for training purposes. Where the short courses presented by the university forms part of a formal course, we don’t need accreditation through another SETA as all our formal courses are accredited by our own SETA. Provider numbers are not allocated.

Our short courses are not registered as SAQA has, because of the enormity of the task to register all university short courses, suspended the recording process. Should short courses be offered to address needs indicated in Workplace Skills Plans (WSP), the university will supply the information necessary to submit rebate claims. Where a training need is not reflected in a WSP, employers may still request an ad hoc rebate from the relevant SETA’s discretionary fund.

The nature and extent of accreditation will therefore depend on whether the materials to be presented form part of the formal or non-formal instructional programme of the university.

The LGSETA granted Full Programme Approval status to the Nelson Mandela University’s Institute for Sustainable Government and Development (ISGAD) as providers of Education, Training and Development for the following Unit Standards as registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) of the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
